As a certifying body, CEDIA is committed to ensuring its certifications remain relevant, credible, and aligned with the real needs of the industry. Every five years, with support from the industry, CEDIA conducts a Job Task Analysis (JTA) for each of its certifications.
A JTA is a structured survey completed by professionals in the field that identifies the core responsibilities of a specific role. The insights gathered directly inform certification exams and training materials, ensuring they accurately reflect real-world job demands.
CEDIA’s 2026 JTA survey specifically focuses on the experienced technician role, aligning with the Integrated Systems Technician (IST) Certification. We encourage any technician or business owner with at least one year of experience to participate.
Input from a diverse cross-section of the industry ensures the IST Certification continues to evolve alongside changing technologies, expectations, and workforce needs.
This survey measures tasks, knowledge, and skills that are currently needed for competent performance by persons who perform all functions related to the pre-wire (First Fix) and trim-out (Second Fix) phases of a project, including troubleshooting errors and verifying system functionality.
The survey can be found here
Anyone who currently performs the role of an IST or is familiar with its duties
The survey takes approximately 20–30 minutes to complete, and respondents may pause and return to it at any time.
The survey must be completed by February 16
Those who complete the survey will be entered into a drawing to win a gift card valued at $500 (USD) / £400 (GBP). View official contest rules here.
CEDIA Certified individuals earn 1 CEU credit for completing this survey.
If you'd like to enter the prize drawing or earn CEU credits, you’ll need to provide your contact information. You may also remain anonymous if you choose.
Your input does more than strengthen CEDIA’s certifications and training programs. The survey also supports CEDIA’s advocacy efforts and informs the development of apprenticeship pathways critical to the future of the industry. The data collected helps elevate recognition of the smart home integration profession among governments, key stakeholders, and accreditation bodies under ISO/IEC 17024.
By participating, you are directly contributing to the continued growth, credibility, and long-term advancement of the smart home integration profession and the next generation of professionals.
