CEDIA has enhanced its in-person education programme to better support professionals across the industry. The refreshed structure delivers a more intuitive, targeted approach to skill-building and career development.
The new training format centres around well-defined, topic-specific pathways, allowing participants to tailor their learning to suit their business needs or career goals. These streamlined pathways focus on key areas such as Lighting, Home Cinema, and Residential Networking, ensuring that each participant gains relevant, job-ready skills.
“We’ve heard from professionals across the industry that they wanted more tailored, hands-on training. This new structure is our direct response,” said Paul Dolenc, Vice President of Education & Training at CEDIA. “By offering clear pathways and flexible course options, we’re giving both individuals and businesses the tools they need to grow with confidence in an evolving smart home landscape.”
The five refreshed training pathways are:
Smart Home Essentials
Smart Home Networking
Home Cinema Design
Smart Home Lighting Design & Control
Smart Home Project Design & Integration
Participants can choose to follow a full pathway aligned with their area of interest or opt for individual day courses to create a customised learning journey. The Smart Home Essentials pathway is ideal for junior team members and those new to the industry, providing a solid grounding in core principles.
While much of the trusted curriculum remains, new enhancements bring added flexibility and clarity. Two new one-day courses have also been introduced to further strengthen the offering: Lighting Panel Design & Build, part of the Smart Home Lighting Design & Control pathway, and Home Cinema Control, part of the Home Cinema Design pathway. These additions provide deeper insights into specialised topics and support a seamless progression from foundational knowledge to advanced practical skills.
Geoff Meads, a long-standing CEDIA Volunteer, added: “We’ve seen the industry shift. As more professionals come from different technical backgrounds - IT, electrical, satellite - the lines between roles like installer and designer have blurred. Businesses need people with a broader understanding, not just one specialism. That’s why these new pathways are designed to provide a more rounded education. Whether you’re a one-person startup or part of a larger team, the idea is to get you contributing meaningfully, quickly. It's not about cramming everything into a single week, it’s about building a foundation you can grow on over time, at a pace that fits real working lives.”
For businesses, this updated approach makes it easier to upskill team members in focused areas. A company specialising in lighting control, for example, can confidently enrol technicians in the Smart Home Lighting pathway, knowing they’ll receive targeted, high-value training. For individuals, the modular structure offers greater control over career development, allowing for a personalised and impactful learning experience.
