In February CEDIA filed comments with the United States government in its continued efforts to support the work for Technology Integrators and limited-energy systems contractors. The federal government solicited public comments on all aspects of the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) for 2027 revisions with an emphasis on new and emerging industries.
The North American Industry Classification System is a system for classifying establishments (individual business locations) throughout North America. This business classification system was last updated in 2022, and it is updated every five years.
With the growth and importance of many limited-energy systems and changes pertaining to limited-energy systems and important changes related to limited energy work to the National Electrical Code®, the 2027 revisions to the NAICS and specifically 238210 Electrical Contractors and Other Wiring Installation Contractors must reflect how the National Electrical Code® is being modernized to support the limited-energy infrastructure and technological advances in the 2026 and 2029 editions of the National Electrical Code®.
To support the smart home technology industry, it is vital the 2027 NAICS revisions to 238210 Electrical Contractors and Other Wiring Installation Contractors reflect this growth and changes to limited-energy systems and the limited-energy systems contractors that support these numerous technology-based solutions in residential and commercial projects.
In August, CEDIA also filed comments with the United States government to advocate for the establishment of the Technology Integrators occupational code and this work continues. By doing so, CEDIA aims to ensure that the professional contributions of Technology Integrators are accurately recognized and classified. In addition to submitting comments to the Standard Occupation Classification (SOC) Policy Committee, CEDIA worked with Congress to submit a letter of support for this initiative and bring greater awareness to the government agency about the importance of establishing a separate occupational code for Technology Integrators.
Representatives Michael Cogbill and Ken Erdmann of CEDIA’s Code Making Panel 3 have been integral in reviewing changes and submissions to the 2026 edition of the National Electrical Code® (NEC). During a series of meetings, the pair provided valuable feedback on several proposed updates, including those related to limited energy systems. Small changes to the NEC can significantly impact the work done by Technology Integrators, so it is critical to have a proactive voice from Technology Integrators in these discussions.
The NEC will undergo major restructuring during the next two code cycles (2026 and 2029), including a number of changes centered on limited-energy systems. The common theme of CEDIA’s ongoing work at the federal level to recognize the work of Technology Integrators and the businesses of limited-energy systems contractors and its valued perspective on upcoming editions of the National Electrical Code® all support the critical work of all CEDIA members and support the many technologies of the smart home technology industry.
