How CEDIA Certification Has Changed My Business

Senior Director of Certification

Key takeaways

  • Certification shifts client conversations from price to trust — CEDIA members report winning work on credibility rather than being the cheapest option, with fewer objections on pricing and scope.
  • The data backs it up — the US home automation market grew to $33.8 billion in 2026, with 78% of integrators serving mid-market and 37% serving uber-luxury clients (up from 16% in 2023), and service agreements now feature in 74% of contracts.
  • Three concrete business changes follow certification — easier client conversations, access to better/larger projects via CEDIA's pre-qualified lead directory, and stronger, more standardised teams.

One of the biggest challenges for smart home integrators is communicating value. In a world where cheap often beats professional, or speed beats quality, installers may find themselves losing out to uncertified competitors and DIY options.

This is where accreditation comes in. Recognition from a trade body is more than a simple badge on a website; it’s a marker of quality and your willingness to invest in professional development. It also impacts how clients engage with you, how projects are priced, and how you can grow your business. Read on to find out how.

“Before CEDIA, I was winning work on price. After, I was winning it on trust.”

Accreditations move initial client consultations from cost to credibility. For example, a client may come to you with questions such as:

  • “Why should I pay more?” – A CEDIA accreditation portrays value as certified by an industry body.
  • “What makes you different?” – Where other integrators may claim they are experts, a CEDIA certification comes with exams and a code of ethics.
  • “Where can I find a professional?” – CEDIA has a professional directory, which brings in pre-qualified leads and negates the conversation about DIY alternatives.

Your accreditation shows customers your dedication to learning. Nathan Cole, CIT, IST, AV Engineer and Installer at Honos Integrated Solutions says: “The IST handbook is a fantastic resource to train new members of my team who are less experienced or who have come from other areas of the AV world."

The numbers behind the credibility

Beyond member testimonials, market data shows a growing trend for certified professionals. According to our 2025 Market Analysis, the home automation industry grew from a net worth of $29 billion in 2023 to $29.9 billion in 2025.

  • Within this, the median residential project size is $18,000.

CEDIA members report less friction around pricing conversations, particularly in mid-market and luxury segments. These customers want only the best – and there’s a lucrative opportunity, given they make up 78% and 37% of these markets respectively.

  • Seven out of 10 integrators can influence product selection.

Accreditations position installers as trusted advisors. This means they can recommend products based on the customer’s long-term needs, reinforcing strong relationships.

  • Service agreements have risen to 74% from 62% in 2023.

Nearly three-quarters of all home automation contracts now come with service agreements. CEDIA members state that their certifications aid the sale of these agreements, offering long-term business continuity.

Three things that changed when members get certified

As we have heard first-hand from our members, a CEDIA accreditation can transform a smart home automation business. Here are three observations we see time and again:

1. Client conversations get easier

With ever-increasing search channels, customers are becoming more discerning. Businesses registered on the CEDIA directory start building that trust from the outset with individual certifications. This gives them competitive advantage - both from an industry perspective and within the search engines.

Our members report fewer objections on pricing and project scope when customers see these credentials. And there’s more than anecdotal evidence, too: the 2025 Market Analysis says communicating value is the #1 challenge for manufacturers and distributors. Accreditations provide a credible solution.

2. They start attracting better projects

With pre-qualified leads coming in through CEDIA’s Find a Professional tool, there are no timewasters. CEDIA members report that project sizes are larger having joined, with more thorough briefs and higher budgets.

This is reflected in our market findings, too. Today, the uber-luxury market makes up 37% of integrators’ client base, up from 16% in 2023. This market expects professional credentials as standard, and that’s what CEDIA has to offer.

3. The team gets stronger

All CEDIA certifications are held by individuals. This means every team member brings their own expertise to the business, while sharing on standardised language across all their comms. Projects work more efficiently thanks to fewer errors and callbacks, too.

The home automation sector is always changing. Access to CEDIA’s educational resources, including white papers and events like the Tech + Business Summits, keep members up to date.

Why now is the right time to get certified

There’s no better time to capitalise on the benefits of a CEDIA certification. In the US alone, 88% of integrators are expecting revenue growth over the next 12 months – a huge upward trend since 72% in 2023.

With an expanding market, so too will the competition, so it’s time to get ahead:

  1. 80% of integrators plan to hire technical teams in the next year. Structured accreditation provides strong foundations for onboarding and training.
  2. Manufacturers and distributors say communicating value is the biggest challenge. Certifications help to showcase your dedication to providing the best service.
  3. Tiered options keep memberships flexible. There is a membership for every entry point, helping you take your smart home integration business to the next level.
