Over the summer, CEDIA welcomed a group of high school students to its headquarters in Fishers, Indiana for a hands-on introduction to the world of smart home technology. Under the guidance of experienced professionals, students spent four days learning how the skills they were developing in their trade programs could be applied to real-world residential technology projects.

Throughout CEDIA’s High School Residential Bootcamp, students participated in classroom sessions, hands-on activities, and presentations covering different areas of residential technology. Rather than learning solely from a textbook, they had the opportunity to work with technology and hear directly from professionals about what it takes to design, install, and support the systems found in today’s connected homes.
The program also demonstrated the variety of roles that exist within the residential technology channel. While students gained exposure to the technical side of the work, they also learned about the people and teams behind the products, installations, and customer experiences.
Matt Spitznagle, VP of Technology and Innovation at Klipsch, gave students an inside look at the manufacturer side of the industry, explaining how products are developed for the residential market and how manufacturers work with installers and retailers throughout the process.
The CEDIA High School Residential Bootcamp was developed through a growing partnership with Hamilton Southeastern Schools in Indianapolis.
“We want to make CEDIA one of our partners as we move our construction and carpentry students on campus,” said Ken Johnson, MS, Director of Workplace Management at Hamilton Southeastern School District.
Industry partnerships also played an important role in the bootcamp. Representatives from Trinnov Audio and Tri-Phase Technologies presented sessions and shared their expertise with students. Blades AV sponsored two students to attend the bootcamp, while Trinnov Audio sponsored another student, helping make the program accessible to those who otherwise may not have been able to participate.
For CEDIA, the program marked an important first step in expanding relationships with schools and trade programs across the country and laying the groundwork for more hands-on opportunities that connect the next generation with the smart home industry.
