Your technology integration certification starts here.
Become CIT CertifiedThe CIT certification represents a smart home technician whose primary task is to perform basic infrastructure wiring for low-voltage technology systems in a residential or commercial setting. CIT Certified technicians are able to use proper tools and techniques, follow instructions per project documentation, and operate in a safe and professional manner on the jobsite.
They understand the basic function of wiring and termination components being installed and are aware of common equipment and systems applications, which they may assist with mounting and installing during later phases of a project. While these individuals typically work under supervision, the CIT certification indicates to employers that they are jobsite ready, can work billable hours performing cabling and installation support, and have foundational knowledge to support additional training on equipment and technology systems.
The CIT certification is great for technicians in the first few years of their career who are looking to verify their foundational knowledge, grow in confidence, demonstrate their commitment to professionalism, and ultimately increase their employability and the business potential of their company.
In an emerging and evolving industry with few traditional education pathways or formal licensing requirements, certification is a way to stand out from competitors and start building a professional profile that will resonate with clients and earn the respect of peers and industry partners.
The CIT Certification is the ideal starting place for a technician wanting to pursue a career in installing and integrating technology systems in various settings. This certification is also for professionals in a wide range of related building and construction trades seeking to expand their skill set into low-voltage cabling for and basic equipment installation.
The CIT certification is a natural starting place for smart home technicians and represents a foundational level of certification in the industry. While many technicians earn and maintain this certificate throughout their career, more experienced individuals are encouraged to earn the intermediate-level Integrated Systems Technician (IST) as it represents the full range of technology integration and installation skills. Technicians with over 3 years of experience are no longer required to earn the CIT as a prerequisite to take the IST.
The CEDIA Certified Cabling & Infrastructure Technician (CIT) is accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) as having met the international standard for personnel certification bodies defined by the ISO/IEC 17024 standard.

The Cabling Infrastructure Technician exam is taken in a proctored environment where candidates have 2 hours to complete the 120 multiple choice questions. No study material is permitted. The passing score is 72% (87 out of 120 questions). It is a pass or fail exam, but candidates will receive a score report which shows their performance in each of the 6 domains according to the Exam Blueprint. For more detailed information about the exam please download the Exam Guidance.
There are no education or experience prerequisites to take the CIT Exam. All candidates must complete the application prior to testing which includes agreement to the Certification Code of Conduct.
For more guidance on recommended experience please download the CIT Exam Guidance.
The CIT is valid for 3 years and is renewed by completing the following:
1. Submit renewal application, $40 renewal fee and code of conduct agreement.
2. Complete an approved 3-hour “CIT Renewal Course”.
This can be taken during the 3rd year of certification and CEDIA currently offers an approved course free of charge. Unlike other certifications the CIT does not accumulate 30 CEUs as only the above-mentioned renewal course is needed. However, if a CIT holder also has other certifications, then they will need the 30 CEUs to renew those separately. Please visit the Certification Portal for more details on managing your certifications. Complete policies can be found in the CIT Handbook.
