At the start of 2024, most state legislatures will be back in session. Throughout these sessions, CEDIA will monitor, track, and lobby on issues impacting our members and those related to the smart home technology industry.
CEDIA’s Government Affairs Program works daily to ensure harmful legislation and regulations do not impact our members’ ability to own and operate their business. As the industry continues to evolve, CEDIA will vigorously defend your rights to work without the burdens of unfriendly legislation or regulations.
In 2023, the number of legislative bills and regulations CEDIA tracked significantly increased to over 1,100 bills and regulations related to smart home technology industry issues.
Several factors indicate 2024 will be an active legislative session for CEDIA and the smart home technology industry. States will continue to adopt the 2023 edition of the National Electrical Code®, which will lead to legislation related to licensing and scope of work for different licenses.
CEDIA works daily to monitor, track, and lobby on licensing legislation and regulations to ensure that the appropriate scope of work for a license or an exemption covers the work done by integrators today and in the future.
Several states have adopted the 2023 edition of the National Electrical Code® as their state’s electrical code through legislation or regulations – most without amendments. When a state adopts the National Electrical Code® with amendments, CEDIA monitors the amendments to see if they’re related to Chapter 7 or 8 of the National Electrical Code®. States will continue to adopt updated versions of the National Electrical Code® in 2024.
Get Engaged for Your Industry
Daily, CEDIA advocates for its members and the smart home technology industry. Most legislative sessions begin at the start of 2024, and it is important members stay engaged on issues related to their business and industry. Members are needed to advocate for technology issues throughout the legislative process whether at the federal, state, or local level. CEDIA members are experts in their field, and they are the perfect people to help legislative leaders understand the technology impacting their industry.
Attend Local Town Hall Meetings
Most legislative leaders hold Town Hall meetings several times each year to meet with constituents and provide legislative updates. Town Hall meetings provide fantastic opportunities to have face-to-face access to your legislative leaders while they are back in the district.
As we prepare for the 2024 legislative sessions, take the time in 2024 to attend local Town Hall meetings in your area to educate your federal and state legislative leaders on your business and the important work of the smart home technology industry when they are holding a Town Hall meeting.
CEDIA values your interest, involvement, and all you do for our industry. We look forward to working together during the upcoming 2024 legislative sessions to support our industry. We all have an important role in advocating for our industry.
