Costal Cadence – Best Integrated Home, Level 1 finalist, APAC 2024

The gentle whisper of ocean waves was more than a backdrop for the clients; it symbolised the essence of their new life, guiding them from the bustling chaos of an old colonial home to a contemporary sanctuary by the sea. Their ambition was clear: to transform their compact apartment in Victoria, Australia, into a space where the clutter of cables and the intrusion of bulky electronics were mere memories. This vision was realised by integration outfit Wired By MJD, culminating in the project dubbed ‘Coastal Cadence’.

The clients, one a former estate agent, understood the value of space and aesthetics, having spent their careers creating perfect environments for others. Their move was not just a change of scenery but a declaration of a new lifestyle marked by simplicity and functionality. Their passion for water, reflected in leisurely yacht days, mirrored their desire for an uncluttered yet inviting home. They sought an integrated audiovisual solution that would blend seamlessly with their lifestyle.

In discussions with the clients, it became evident that their aspirations stretched beyond mere convenience. They desired a system that would intuitively align with their needs, becoming a natural extension of their lives without demanding constant technical oversight. The bedroom, with its striking views of the water, became a focal point where technology needed to enhance, not detract from, the experience. This led to the innovative use of mechanical automation to discreetly conceal the bedroom television, turning a practical necessity into a design marvel.

The study, a retreat for the sports enthusiast among them, transformed into a personal entertainment hub. High-quality speakers in the living room enveloped the space with their favourite tunes, creating an ambiance that resonated with their relaxed yet refined lifestyle. The outdoor living area, though modest, was meticulously crafted to entertain guests. Radiant heaters, seamlessly integrated into the control system, ensured a warm and inviting atmosphere, maintaining a clutter-free appearance that respected the limited wall space.

Collaboration with the builder was crucial, with every detail carefully designed to integrate technology with the apartment’s aesthetics. The in-slab conduit works allowed technology to flow discreetly through the space. A control system that felt like second nature, with handheld devices providing instant access to audio-visual zones, combined convenience with elegance. The hallway cupboard, transformed into a sanctuary for electronics, ensured easy servicing and reliability without encroaching on the living space.

The essence of Coastal Cadence was not about gadgets but about crafting an experience tailored to the unique desires and lifestyle of the clients. Each step, from concealing the bedroom television to optimising the hallway cupboard space, reflected a shared vision of simplicity, functionality, and elegance. This project became more than an audio-visual installation; it reflected their journey towards a new chapter in life, seamlessly integrating technology with cherished moments and breathtaking views.

Performance objectives for the project focused on creating tranquillity and efficiency by eliminating clutter and chaos. The KNX relay-based outdoor heater control system exemplified this approach, managing heat output in the al fresco area with precision. Timed features prevented accidental heater operation, while controlled outputs minimised energy waste, all seamlessly integrated into the ELAN interface for user-friendly management.

Ultimately, Coastal Cadence emerged as a sophisticated blend of advanced technology and thoughtful design, transforming a compact apartment into a refined and engaging living space. It surpassed expectations, creating a home where technology serves the lifestyle, artfully combining form with function in a setting that enhances rather than dominates.
