For many states, the legislative session has adjourned or soon will. In 2023, the number of legislative bills and regulations CEDIA tracked significantly increased as the number of legislative issues for the smart home technology industry has grown. In addition to tracking industry-related legislation, CEDIA has lobbied in Maryland, Rhode Island, and Washington State so far in 2023.
Electrical licensing, limited energy licensing, and the broader issue of occupational licensing are important to CEDIA. Many states have also adopted the 2023 edition of the National Electrical Code®, and we also continue to monitor electronic waste and workforce development legislation.
Occupational licensing remains an area of interest to attract workers to a state in a tight labor market. Some common licensing trends at the state level are worker mobility and reducing barriers for veterans, military personnel, and military spouses.
Many states have adopted legislation to reduce licensing barriers for professionals moving between states as well. States continue to address this issue in various ways.
Several states have adopted the 2023 edition of the National Electrical Code® as their state’s electrical code through legislation or regulations - most without amendments. When a state adopts the National Electrical Code® with amendments, CEDIA monitors the amendments to see if they’re related to Chapter 7 or 8 of the National Electrical Code®. States will continue to adopt updated versions of the National Electrical Code® in 2024.
Workforce development continues to be an area of interest throughout the country, as there are a shortage of qualified workers for the large number of job openings in the industry.
CEDIA will continue to monitor these issues before the full-time state legislatures throughout 2023 and begin preparations for the 2024 state legislative sessions.
As we prepare for the 2024 legislative sessions, take the time to attend local Town Hall meetings in your area to educate your legislative leaders on your business and the important work of the smart home technology industry.
