CEDIA Hosts Connected Technology Industry Legislative Summit

In August, CEDIA and the National Systems Contractors Association (NSCA) hosted the fifth annual Connected Technology Industry Legislative Summit at CEDIA’s Headquarters in Fishers, Ind.

In August, CEDIA and the National Systems Contractors Association (NSCA) hosted the fifth annual Connected Technology Industry Legislative Summit at CEDIA’s Headquarters in Fishers, Ind. The hybrid meeting brought together industry stakeholders to discuss common legislative and workforce development issues impacting the industry and discuss strategies for working together to advocate on these common issues for the associations, businesses, and stakeholders of this industry.

The Connected Technology Industry Legislative Summit started due to the increased legislative and regulatory activity impacting the connected technology industry. Throughout the legislative process CEDIA, other associations, and businesses of the connected technology industry are often up against the electrical trade on electrical licensing issues driven by the increased use of technologies like Power over Ethernet (PoE) and lighting control.

The ongoing debate has been who can install these technologies: electricians or integrators. The electrical trade is unified and represented by the I.B.E.W., NECA, and the Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC) in their legislative efforts throughout the process. The connected technology industry needed a similar unified effort to have a greater impact on key legislative issues for the industry.

The Connected Technology Industry Consortium is made up of associations and businesses from different segments of the industry.

Organizations participating in the consortium include: Amazon/Ring, Anixter, Belden, Best Buy, BICSI, CEDIA, Cisco Systems, Comcast/Xfinity, CCCA, DIRECTV, Dish, ESA, HPE, Johnson Controls, Leviton, NSCA, NRG, Panduit, SBCA, Vector Security, and Vivint.

CEDIA hosted the fifth annual Connected Technology Industry Legislative Summit at CEDIA HQ in August 2023. Throughout the day long meeting, discussions covered all levels of government from local, state, and federal issues related to the connected technology industry.

Each year following the completion of most state legislative sessions, CEDIA and NSCA host the Connected Technology Industry Legislative Summit to review the legislative sessions and prepare for the next sessions.

Throughout the day long meeting, discussions covered all levels of government from local, state, and federal issues related to the connected technology industry.

Other topics covered during this year’s Legislative Summit included:

  • The National Electrical Code®
  • Integrator Occupational Classification Adoption
  • The size and scope of the connected technology industry
  • Workforce development and the important work of integrators
  • Industry White Paper on the safety of technology systems

Since 2019, the Legislative Summit has provided the opportunity for the connected technology industry to come together and discuss common legislative and regulatory issues and support this important industry.
