A family-focused theater was the brief. The client wanted crisp, high-quality picture and sound for movies and sports, a front-of-room space where his young twin daughters could put on performances, and, most distinctively, a room that opens fully to the adjacent bar area so the theater could function as part of the entertaining space rather than a sealed-off black box.

Design Challenges and Smart Fixes

The theater needed two-way isolation from a family room directly above

Resilient construction, damped layered assemblies, and added mass controlled sound transfer in both directions.

Interior space was tight, and standard isolation blocks would eat into it

Newer-generation Hushframe blocks limited wall thickening to about 1 inch instead of 1.7 inches per wall.

A shallower resilient ceiling had a higher resonance, risking visible picture bounce

The projector tray was spring-floated independently at roughly 3 Hz, well below the ceiling's resonance.

Open doors physically covered the rear-wall speakers

A selectable speaker configuration reroutes back-channel audio to adjacent speakers automatically when the doors are open.

"The result is a theater whose use is no longer confined to the seated audience inside it. It extends naturally into the rest of the entertainment space."
