Drive-In Theater - Best Home Cinema, Americas, 2023

This gorgeous home cinema was built for a luxury home builder. After he purchased his dream home in southern California, he wanted to add a dedicated cinema space. Deciding against digging under the home, he reached out to Audio Images to see if they could transform an old carport into a good quality movie room. After an onsite visit, the integrator determined that all mechanical systems would have to be replaced, the room would have to be closed off and sound isolated, and they had to do something about the prominent ceiling beam.

The space was tricky, especially since the client wanted “jaw-dropping sound and picture.” Audio Images enlisted the help of Anthony Grimani’s PMI Engineering group to get the project done. All the details were considered when reconfiguring the space, installing a new HVAC system to meet noise requirements, and installing specialty, acoustically treated drape system over the windows.

When all was said and done, the team was able to create a room that was “beyond expectations” that provides a “breathtaking cinematic experience.”

The judges were impressed with the transformation. One judge noted, “Fantastic transformation of the space, with careful acoustic design overcoming the effects of the large, glazed sections.” Another said, ““All around, a very nice design and installation in a difficult space. AV performance appears maximized for the space and construction detailing is particularly impressive.”

The most important judge, the client, was thrilled with his theatre. Audio Images shared that he uses it for “movies and TV (and even music listening) at least 2-3 nights a week.”
