The client was looking for a reference-quality theatre loud enough for a metal concert with effortless low-end and crystal clarity at any volume, equally capable for movies, music, and live sports. They specified D-Box motion seating from day one, wanted the largest screen the room could support, required extreme sound isolation so the rest of the household could function normally, and needed the room to integrate seamlessly into the estate's classical Italian architecture, including honed Port Laurent Black marble and custom walnut detailing. The brief also called for DCI compliance to support future commercial-grade content.

Design Challenges and Smart Fixes

Cinema reference SPL needed to coexist with extreme sound isolation

A room-within-a-room-within-a-room construction reached STC 55 and an NC10 noise floor.

Port Laurent Black marble added significant dead load to an already complex resilient structure

A separate 6x10 timber frame carried the marble's weight without compromising decoupling.

A 400-pound projector and a 1,300-pound screen needed rigging through finished construction

Both were delivered and installed in stages with custom handling.

A flexing ceiling under heavy bass risked visible picture bounce

The projector was suspended on spring hangers tuned to roughly 3 Hz, well below the ceiling's flex range.

"The client wanted a room loud enough to feel like a metal concert and isolated enough that the rest of the residence wouldn't know it was happening."
